It is known that 20 students studying at Wankidi Tribal Ashram School in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district fell ill with vomiting and diarrhea at the school on October 30. All of them, except Shailaja, who is studying in class nine, and two others, recovered after treatment. All three were treated at a private hospital in Mancherial and were shifted to NIMS in Hyderabad on the 5th of this month for better treatment. The condition of two of them improved and they were discharged. Shailaja was put on a ventilator for almost 20 days and treated but to no avail. Her parents burst into tears upon hearing the news of Shailaja's death.
Shailaja's family members are expressing their grief that the school staff's negligence caused her death. The students are angry that the authorities have not informed them of the reasons for the death even after it has been almost 27 days since they started vomiting and diarrhea. Mali Sangam leaders are demanding that the government provide a job, house and compensation to one of Shailaja's family members. Meanwhile, former minister Harish Rao has demanded that the government take responsibility for Shailaja's death and provide Rs. 50 lakh compensation to her family. He has flagged that Shailaja fell victim to the government's negligence and the laziness of the authorities. While providing poor quality food in the Gurukul is one sin, Harish Rao has expressed his anger that not providing timely and better treatment to the sick students is another sin.
